Title:  Flying Animals

 

 

 

 Brief History and Background:T

his lesson is based on kinetic sculpture by Alexander Calder. Students will learn about mobiles and movement in space.  Students will use color and shape to create a flying figure that will suspend. Students learn about balance, symmetry, and  movement.

Goal:  

Students will create a standing mobile of a flying animal.




Objectives:

Students will:
1.    Students will improve cognitive skills by interactively exploring and discussing animals that can fly.
2.    Students will improve motor skills by attaching elements to a form.       
3.    Students will improve motor skills by painting a base structure.
4.    Students will create a flying animal.


Resource Materials/Visual Aides:

Exemplars


Supplies/Materials:

wire
styro-foam balls or eggs
styro-foam base
paint
glue
assorted decorative materials

Teacher Preparation:

Set up exemplar
Ready formed wire armatures.
Have supplies readily accessible at supply station
Extra painted bases

Introduction:

Teacher will discuss Alexander Calder and mobiles.  Teacher will explain balance and movement of a suspended object.  Students will explore various flying animals and teacher will write them on board.  Teacher will discuss space, symmetry, and shape.  The initiative is to help children think about the balance of weight and movement of a flying animal.

Directions:

1.    Students will observe and discuss mobiles
2.    Students will discuss various flying animals and try to spell them.
3.    Students will decorate forms.
4.    Students will attach wings and tails.
5.    Students will mark center of bases.
6.    Students will insert wire into bases.  
7.    Students will suspend from wire.
8.    Students will create a standing mobile of a flying animals.

50 mins. 5 min. introduction
40 min. work period
2 min. group review
3 min. clean up
